ESSELUNGA

Company: Esselunga – italy

Esselunga is an Italian company controlled by Supermarkets Italiani SPA, operating in retail chain. Established in 1957, the first shop was opened in Milano and the name came from the big “s” as sign, designed by Max Huber, world famous graph.
Today Esselunga controls about 9% of sales in Italian supermarkets and hypermarkets, with over 165 stores located mainly in the north and center of the country and has more than 24,000 employees.
It is generally recognized as an absolute market excellence.
It has a strong environmental sustainability policies with stringent objectives in terms of emissions reduction, waste management and sustainable packaging.

As part of a long-term program aimed at an extensive reduction of CO2 emissions throughout the supply chain by 2025, the customer wanted to test an effective solution that would guarantee significant energy savings and consequent reduction of emissions on the main logistics – production hub of Biandrate, in order to evaluate its application also in its supermarkets.

The project

The logistics hub of Esselunga in Biandrate (NO), in addition to the storage of goods that are then shipped throughout Italy, is also a processing center for some food products.
In the second half of 2020, 6 EP-X EP1400 A systems were installed in the 4 main electrical cabins of the site.

The systems have been equipped with magnetothermal protections and related accessories in order to allow the protection of every single EP-X that has been installed between the medium voltage transformer and the respective general switch. The average percentage breakdown of electrical loads handled by the cabins where the EP-X devices were installed is as follows:

• 40% Air Conditioning/UTA/Compressors • 40% Machinery operated by inverters
• 15% Machinery not operated by inverters • 5% Electronic lighting

Esselunga decided to proceed with the application of the EP-X devices also for its supermarkets.
